Preparing for your home move?

Moving house is a very exciting milestone in your life and one that a lot of us consider with the approach of a new year.

However, in the excitement it can be very easy to overlook some of the more serious practicalities.

Here are the essential considerations for you to be aware of:

Life Insurance

Should you be taking out a mortgage, your lender might ask about life insurance. Whilst it isn’t a legal requirement, providing for the family is a priority for most of us. This is why it makes sense to arrange life insurance, which will offer a degree of financial protection for your family in the unfortunate event of your death.

With access to leading UK providers, we can arrange the optimum level of cover, providing exactly the benefits you require, at a competitive premium.

Surveys

Often these are very detailed but it is imperative to read them cover to cover. You will need to provide material facts you are aware of when obtaining home insurance quotes. These include but aren’t limited to information on flooding, nearby water, previous movement/subsidence and construction. All this information affects the terms and premiums offered by a prospective insurer.

Any current damage to the home won’t be covered by a home insurance policy. Therefore it is advised any actions from the report regardless how minor are addressed as soon as possible.

Home Insurance

The majority of the time it is a requirement to have buildings insurance in place as you exchange on your new property, as this is when you are legally responsible for your new home.

Ensure you have adequate cover for your home and contents during the move and in the immediate days or weeks following. Check your policy as many policies only cover the move when using a professional removal company.

Almost four million items are lost, damaged or stolen during house moves each year.* It’s also a good idea to make an inventory, as this will prevent you from losing sight of missing possessions. Furthermore, we recommend the valuations for your jewellery and fine art are up to date.

Moving house is already very costly, so it’s crucial you’re not having to replace or repair any possessions using your own funds, which could have been better spent elsewhere.

Even before you’ve made your new place a home, you need to be speaking to your insurance broker to protect your new home and possessions whilst in transit, and to make sure a new policy will cover you from the first day in the new property.
